Park makeovers reach new milestones during lockdown

CITY of Parramatta Council’s $5M revamp of green spaces in Telopea has reached a new milestone.

The newly refurbished Acacia Park is set to reopen to the community soon, as construction starts on nearby Sturt Park including upgrades to the skatepark and playground.

“Telopea is undergoing a significant transformation and we are proud to deliver these fantastic park upgrades that will meet the needs of our growing community, now and into the future,” City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Steven Issa said.

“We know how much people cherish their local parks and playgrounds, which is why we timed construction so the community would still have access to either Sturt Park or Acacia Park as much as possible throughout lockdown.

“As the weather warms up and restrictions ease, now is the perfect time to enjoy all that the upgraded Acacia Park has to offer.”

New artist impressions offer a first look at the proposed Sturt Park revamp, set to be completed in early 2022. It will include the City’s only flying fox, along with improvements to the playground equipment and skate bowl. It will also have a new nature play area, multi-use court, seating, sheltered picnic areas, barbeques, and toilet facilities.

The improved Acacia Park features barbeques, picnic tables, benches, new toilet facilities, a new walking track with blocks for strength training and resting, and an accessible platform with a unique view of the Parramatta CBD.

The upgrades are being funded by the NSW Government through its Precinct Support Scheme.

Telopea is located in the Dundas Ward of the City of Parramatta, which is represented by Deputy Lord Mayor Cr Michelle Garrard, Cr Benjamin Barrak and Cr Pierre Esber.

“I’d like to acknowledge and thank Deputy Lord Mayor Cr Garrard, Cr Barrak and Cr Esber for their efforts in advocating for these upgrades and their contributions to the design process,” Cr Issa said.
